How People Learn
My connection
One connection I had with the reading was, "Information and knowledge are growing at a far more rapid rate than ever before
in the history of humankind." I thought about technology available when I was in school. The information we received was from the t.v. news and newspaper. When we
needed information we went looking in encyclopedias. The internet has made updated information available to more and more people. Today, cell phones have made it possible for us to be in contact whenever we need to. The internet has made it possible to talk to others easily.
One of my important ideas
"Learning is enhanced when teachers pay attention to the knowledge and beliefs learners bring to a learning task." I am
alway amazed by what the children in my class know or think they know about a particular topic. I think that evaluating
the learners prior knowledge is an important step because it really helps the teacher to know what the children want to
learn and any misconceptions they may have. It is also important that we can show students where they can go to find information and evaluate their own understanding. I remember one time asking students if they thought pumpkins could float and why. One little
boy told the class that pumpkins could float because there were spiders inside holding it up. You never know what you might hear!
One question
What does self-directed learning look like in a Grade One classroom. Many of my grade ones can not read or write
yet. How do I encourage self directed-active learning with 24 children who need help reading the information they find.
What does this article teach us about learning.
I think this article teaches us that technology is changing education. What teachers need to be teaching children has changed and that the role of teachers is changing. Teachers need to be able to teach their students how to be critical thinkers and problems solvers. They need to encourage students to use the technology available but also evalute its benefit and the authenticity of the information found. I think this article encourages teachers to empower students to take control of their own learning and use technology as a learning tool.
